THE PIG PEN

If you missed Wednesday night during our recent Vacation Bible School, you missed a real treat. Mike Miller made effective use of our “pig pen” (as it has been affectionately named by those involved in its construction) as he arranged for a collection of tame animals to tie in with this year’s VBS theme, Son Country [...]

And it’s winter before we know it….

You know, time has a way of moving quickly and catching you unaware of the passing years. It seems just yesterday that I was young, just married and embarking on my new life with my mate.   And yet in a way, it seems like eons ago, and I wonder where all the years went.  I know [...]

ACCORDING TO THE PATTERN

Carl Ketcherside  was often spoken of with disdain in some congregations of churches of Christ. Although I never met him, I consider him to have been a true “hero of the faith.”
Here are some words from his writing in “Mission Messenger” (1970)
I never met the man of whom I write but he was a graduate of one of the Christian colleges before the turn [...]

Need A Good Laugh?

Here is the Washington Post’s Mensa Invitational which once again  asked readers to take any word from the dictionary, alter it by adding, subtracting, or changing one letter, and supply a new definition.

And the winners are!!

1. Cashtration (n.): The act of buying (or building) a house, which  renders the subject financially impotent
for an indefinite period [...]

The Church Has Left The Building

Strange how ideas from varied sources sometimes seem to all arrive at the same time. Noel Whitlock’s presentation at the morning assembly of the College congregation in Searcy came between my reading of the following two posts. One of Noel’s points of emphasis was that how over the years we have  judged each other faithful by how often we [...]

Two Wolves Inside Each Of Us

There is a Native American folktale about a young man confiding in his Grandfather that he sometimes treats his friends harshly and sometimes kindly. He did not understand why.
His Grandfather said, “When I was your age…I felt like there were two Wolves fighting inside of me…one was mean and ornery, rebellious and committed to all [...]

Defining The Terms

Definitions of three words I think, as Christians, we need to know.
Thanks to Mike Cope for the first two (which I think I now understand).
“Missional” — a term that has popped up that I describe as “the church has left the building.” It’s what we’ve always believed at our best. The priesthood of all believers. You aren’t [...]

A Real Hero Comes Home

Sgt. Willie Spears, Bronze Star winner, with his dad and brothers at Red River Arsenal in 1945.
Willie went ashore in the invasion at Cherbourg, France and fought across France into Germany. He was one of only three men in his company to come home.

Clifton, Willie, Papa and James
The officer with authority to recommend him for a medal gave him [...]

An Interesting Take On Patriotism

Of all the emotions that move men to action, patriotism is the most capable.  When it is aroused there is not other social force comparable to it in the completeness with which it dominates all men.  It lifts the average man up out of the concerns of a work-a-day world into the noblest spirit of [...]

Veterans Day

I recently visited the Liberty Memorial Museum in Kansas City. The aging facility has undergone a multi-million dollar renovation and has officially become the National World War I Museum and is a now a world class museum. The view from the top of the monument is spectacular. I wish I could have been there today.
